Can a 7kw electric car charger use 380v electricity

A friend once asked about this: I want to install a 7kW electric car charger at home, but the electricity drawn from the meter is 380V. Can I use it directly?

To be honest, it depends on the score of this matter. Most commonly seen 7kw electric vehicle chargers on the market are designed for 220V single-phase electricity. If you directly apply 380V, there is a high probability of problems - some may not charge properly, while others may burn the machine. So in general, it is not recommended to directly connect.

Why do people still struggle with this? Nowadays, many residential areas or self built houses directly provide three-phase 380V electricity when applying for an electric meter. Users don't understand the difference between single-phase and three-phase, so they think that 'even if the power is the same, the high voltage should also be usable', but that's not the case. If you really want to connect it, either find an electrician to draw a live wire and a neutral wire from the 380V to make it 220V (pay attention to load balancing, don't press a certain phase too hard), or replace it with an electric vehicle charger that supports three-phase electricity, such as 11kw or 22kw.

But some people just want a power of 7kw and don't want to tinker with the circuit. What should they do? There are also some solutions to this difficulty now. For example, some manufacturers will design a wide voltage 7kw electric vehicle charger with an automatic recognition circuit inside. Like Hongjiali's AC pile, it can perform a test before connecting to 380V. If the voltage is not correct, it will directly prompt or automatically cut off, without burning out forcefully. If your home really only has 380V electricity and you don't want to change the line, you can also look at models like Hongjiali that come with voltage conversion protection. Before installation, let their technicians judge whether it is safe to extract one phase from the three-phase electricity for use.

Hongjiali(HG Power) 7kw electric car charger project

Overall, whether a 7kW electric vehicle charger can use 380V electricity depends mainly on the design of the charging station itself. The vast majority cannot, and a few specially designed ones may be able to withstand or provide protection. The safest way is to confirm with the manufacturer before buying, or choose a device with intelligent recognition and voltage abnormality protection, like the Hongjiali(HG Power) mentioned earlier, which will not be scrapped just because of a wrong power connection. Don't try it on your own, find someone who understands electricity to help you find the most practical solution.
